So this is partially not wedding related, but at the same time it is..it's complicated...

Tuxes and tie colors question

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 10:04 AM
I hadn't given much thought about this until this morning.

My dad is wearing a tan tux just like the groom and groomsmen. My girls are wearing clover so the men are wearing clover ties. (The groom might wear a white tie or a clover tie, it is undecided.) Should my dad wear a clover tie like the guys or a pink tie to match my mom? Her outfit is pink pants and shell with a floral jacket where the flowers are primarily pink. If it matters the groom's father is opting to not wear a tux so he can better match the MOG.

Hey, for the guests to share digital pictures of the wedding and whatnot...which one do you consider best: Flickr or Photobucket?

I'd like to know a bit more about each before deciding which one to sign up for.

Thanks!

One of my BM's who I've been going back and forth on asking to step down, told me this weekend that she is getting a different dress to change into for the reception. Ummm, no. If anyone changes into a different dress it's me, the bride, to make it a bit easier to dance. She has no reason to change dresses. She didn't even ask me if she could, just told me. It's not like the dresses we picked are huge and stuffy. I told her no and it ended there, but still, how annoying. She has been a mild pain in my arse since Day 1. Just had to vent. And yes, I realize asking her to step down will more than likely kill our friendship, but I'm okay with that.

And I guess this can be for grooms as well, though it's mostly the ladies I've seen on here...

Just wanted to give everybody a heads up that in the July issue of Brides magazine there is a coupon for 25% off your entire purchase at Michaels Crafts!! I used mine to get stuff to make our card box and for some materials to do place cards and invitations. I think it expires in late July, so there's not a lot of time left on it. The magazine may not be on the stands anymore, but I found the coupon in a copy at the hair salon, so you never know!!

In other wedding planning-y news I've recently:
* begun making our card box (it's going to be house-shaped since the money will go towards our house fund!)
* figured out how to do place cards that also tell the servers what entree people are having
* figured out how to do the names on the pocket folds that will be our invitations
* finalized the guys' tuxedos and sent them all the info on fitting, etc

And FH talked to both his parents this past weekend and they're each going to give us $1000 to help with wedding stuff; hooray! Now we don't have to live on beans and rice to pay for so much stuff ourselves!!!

Happy Monday to all :-D

Hi, everyone! I have a few questions that I'd be delighted if someone could help me with, even with giving a few tips. I've been sewing for a little while now, but I'm still very much a novice. I'm currently planning on undertaking a project that involves making my own patterns and I just need some guidance.

The questions (and pictures) are behind a cut for your benefit.

Help with creating a pattern based off a costume + spiral sewing? )

And a question about layering )

Thank you!

hi! & a couple questions :D

Well just posting a healthy little update :)

All  last week I've been working out one way or another - just trying to keep moving. And I've found myself snacking on a small cup of frozen fruit which has allowed me to be like "mmm something cold" and then "mm something sweet". It's really hot around here - thats for sure, so the cold fruit actually helps make me feel better.

July 4th was something I quite honestly feared - I thought by going to a party I'd end up eatting a bunch of junk food and regret it. But in fact I feel like I was pretty good. I had a small handful of chips, 2 hot dogs, and later on a couple smores. The worst thing I did was drink a lot of soda. Saturday my husband had to work another 24hr shift so I pushed myself to kick my own butt around. I did 2 different Hip Hop Ab routines and then went to the gym to do some weights and push myself to jog/run on the treadmill. And I did some sit ups, which worked my lower abs to death.

I was in so much pain yesterday - but managed to do some push ups. I'm still in pain - my arms are sore and my abs are actually aching - which i assume is good. lol

I start to feel like I'm doing the same activities after a while though. Hip Hop Abs - Running/Jogging - Walking at a face pace on the treadmill - or using the eliptical. I'm excited about saving up to buy some bikes for me and my husband but that wont be for another couple of months. Is there anything that you all find helpful as an activity that I could do to mix it up a bit? I'd prefer if it wasn't anything I have to go out and buy things for although I'm interested in buying a set of hand weights or weighted gloves to give my workouts just a bit more.

Also - my husband looked at me the other day and said the only real way to make any more progress with my weightloss was to be a calorie counter. I'm mindful of what I eat, and I try really hard to make sure I dont eat a lot of junk - but I dont deny myself much of what I crave- or else I usually cave completely at some point and stuff my face. I dont measure what I eat - nor do I know how to measure it, aside from "Cup" "tablespoon" etc. Things like steak I never know what to put that down as and I try looking only to get frustrated. Should I start counting calories? Or keeping a workout journal - last semester I had started taking a PE course (when due to financial situations I had to drop it) the teacher required that her students do some kind of fitness activity 3 times a week and on weeks we met in class - you could count the fitness activity we did as one of them. I liked this so much that I pushed myself to work out for class. (not to mention that  she was talking about going for a mile run and I was like EEEK! I'm so out of shape!) I could always do a fitness journal & a food journal or something together, I'm just not sure I want to stop and think about everything I put in my mouth - although I'm sure that would help me weed out whats not helping me/whats unhealthy.

Anyways I appreciate any answers and sorry this post is so long.
Keep up the good work everyone! :)

honey vs. sugar

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Hokay. So this is probably kind of a dumb question. I know that in the end, sugars are all just sugar and none of them are any good for you. However, if you were using something natural as a sweetener (say in tea), are there forms of sugar that are "better" than others, and if so, why? I've heard that foods that are less refined are better for your body, but does that apply in this case? Specifically, I'm wondering about honey vs. white sugar.

I know, I know, I should really work on cutting out sugars altogether... *slinks off in shame*

My 8-year-old sister is my favorite crafting buddy ever. Recently here in New Orleans, there was a fashion show to benefit a local non-profit called Recycle for the Arts. One part of the fashion show featured designs made by kids aged 8 - 15.

Each participant got a bag containing thrifted clothes and some donated fabric and were asked to recreate an outfit. They had to do it in two weeks! We used a lot of fabric glue, handstitching, and iron-on appliques since she is a beginner to sewing. (And, uh, I'm not that great at it myself.)

Here are pictures of my sister's design:

Her sketch of how she wanted the outfit to be.

More photos behind the cut. Warning: Photo heavy!! )

You can view more photos from her working on the outfit and from the actual event, including other kids' designs and some of the adults' designs at my Flickr page.

Rice Bags

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 11:07 PM
So simple, I am almost ashamed to post it. But, if any of you, like me, have back aches or cramps, then these little dohickeys can really help.

I made some rice bags. Basically they're sewn up tubes filled with rice. You microwave them for 30 to 45 seconds and they retain heat really well. They're heating pads that are safe to fall asleep with (unlike the plug in electric type) and you're not tied to a cord or an outlet. I added some essential oil scent to the rice so they smell good when microwaved. I made little slipcovers for them out of flannel. The little pillow case style slipcovers make the bags even more comfy and the cover can be slipped off and stuck in the wash. (You can not wash the rice bag without ending up with a gross mess of partially cooked rice.) I sewed some velcro into the tops of the bags as a closure. Mine are long narrow tubes to go on my lower back and around my neck. They can be made in any shape though.

click for picture and a few more details )

It's not much, but it was a fun, easy, and really useful project. And they make great gifts.

Fun Alternative use for rice bag heating pads: If you life in a cold climate (like say Alaska where I live), and you have a pet who is sensitive or unused to the cold weather (like an indoor cat or a hedgehog), toss a warmed up rice bag in their carrier if you have to take them on a winter-time trip to the vet. Or just give it to them to cuddle on a particularly chilly day so they can stay by their favorite drafty window spot. (Yes my cat is spoiled.)
Hey everyone, I have an update to this post...

I ordered my bridal bouquet from Fleurspermail on June 25 and according to their website, they use USPS and it can take 4 - 6 weeks for them to arrive. (Our wedding is in November, so that's not an issue.) It apparently only took them 12 days... (my loose flower sample from wedideas took exactly 1 month.)

They arrived TODAY from a mail carrier. Yes today is Sunday, and yes I've never seen a mail carrier deliver on a Sunday. FH had to sign for it since I was at a baseball game and then he was texting me pictures of the bouquet so I couldn't wait to get home.

My FH said, "Wow, they packed a LOT of flowers into that bouquet!" I have to agree, it feels very bridal-ish! (Although, not too heavy!) They also came very well packed in the box - it is full of padding to keep the flowers safe.

So without further adeau, I present to you pictures of my bouquet taken out in my backyard so you can see it in natural sunlight. (This is also the reason the pictures are taken from the same distance, LOL.)

The one picture I forgot to take was of the stems, and of course it's almost midnight right now, but they wrapped them just as I asked, with white satin in a bow and then the bottoms of the green stems show through.

My only suggestion would be to instruct them not to add scent to the bouquet. It said somewhere on the site that if your order hits a certain amount, they would include it. Mine didn't hit that amount, but they still sprayed them with the scent. It's okay, its kinda like a floral perfume, but I worry about one of my BM's sneezing or something, so I will note that when I order the rest of the flowers. I am going to be airing these out over the next few days.

I would totally refer them and plan to get the rest of my flowers from them. They were quick with a confirmation email, and asked me to confirm the handle style since I wasn't very clear on my initial order, and then I got a confirmation with the tracking number, which I didn't plan on checking for another few weeks.

For those who are worried because they are way over in Thailand, I used PayPal, so it was really safe and simple.

Hi. I checked the memories and couldn't find anything on this topic. Hopefully I'm not reposting questions.

Does anyone here have experience with making vinyl wall decals? I would like to try but I'm afraid that my design might be too large to work. How large can you go before you loose sticking power? Is there a certain type or brand of vinyl that has more cling to it?

Thanks.

Okay, really random (and geeky) questions.

I'm planning on making a latex prosthetic for my new LARP character. It's going to be a few crystals (kind of quartz like, but they need to be less weighty) jutting from my lower forehead and cheekbone areas. They'll be about dime to nickel in size, with latex "skin" around the bottom of the crystal to give the illusion of growth. I understand the basic concept behind the latex part. Make negative mold of face, use that to make a positive, build on positive with oil based clay, etc.

The tough part is the crystals. I'd rather not toy with resin at this point(lack of funds/transport/well-ventilated area) and I'd really like to be able to carve the material. The two things I have on hand that are relatively translucent and can be carved are Melt and Pour soap, and Candlewax.

All jokes aside about smelly nerds, would either of these work (provided I coat them in Triple Thick, or some other spray or paint sealant)? I figure I'd be screwed if I left either on the dash of my car, but would regular contact with body heat and/or sweat melt them or soften them enough to be easily smooshed? I game in upstate NY so the temperature isn't crazy hot outside.

I figure this question is a real shot in the dark. I doubt anyone has strapped a candle or bar of soap to their person, but it can't hurt to ask. :) If anyone has any other material suggestions that would be great. It would need to be able to withstand an accidental nerf-bat blow to the noggin.

hi all, just want to post about my 6-7-8 wedding. I feel really bizarre about my wedding-- it was in no way the most perfect day of my life at all-- and for a while I was really confused about how I felt about how it went, because the highs were SO high, and the frustrations were pretty annoying. But I've thoroughly enjoyed my last month of married life, so I think I'm now ready to talk about the wedding sanely, and I think I have a lot of valuable experience (and not-dialup friendly pro pics from my amazing photogs) to share with you all:

Shopping bags!

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 10:55 PM
I want to thank the person who responded to a post about people's favorite projects with a link to their personal link library that led me to this pattern. Sorry that's so incredibly vague, but, well... I have a mind like a steel sieve. Never remember a detail I can forget. :/

Anyway, the instructions are: here and in that forum you can see pictures of ones far more creative (and better sewn!) than mine. The idea is brilliant, though, and the bags work really well. They are a bit time-consuming to make, and attention to detail (which I obviously do not have!) is important to make the job go smoothly. Still, I'm very happy not to have to haul plastic bags in for recycling any more!

Anyone tried Polyvore yet?

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 11:39 PM

Inspired by this contest over at Weddingbee, I finally figured out how to use Polyvore and this is what I came up with. It's not my dress, mainly because I couldn't find a photo of it with a background that dropped out easily. But it's similar enough that I think it works well.

Has anyone else used this before? I think I am addicted now-- I worked on this for quite a while today, and I think I may put together a more traditional inspiration board too.
